Laptops have VGA, DVI, HDMI ports. The HDMI stands for High-Definition Media Interface to transfer audio-video signals. Check the available port in your computer and laptop to connect an external monitor.
In Windows 10 search box type Display will show Change Display settings from System Settings. You can also access the Display settings by searching Settings in the Windows search box. In Windows settings, under System>Display.
The new display will be automatically detected and displayed in the Display setting. If it is not detected click Detect to detect the available display. The displays are marked as 1,2, so on. If you couldn’t find which one is the first or the second click Identify, the display number will be shown on the corresponding monitor screen. You can change the multiple display settings for more productivity. If you want to extend the display screen, under Multiple Displays, select Extend these displays. If you want to make the selected display as your main display, Check (tick) Make this my main display. The selected display will be your main display. In Multiple Displays, you can see different options like, Duplicate these displays, Extend these displays, Show only on 1, Show only on 2. If you want to see more settings click the Advanced Display settings. In the Advanced Display settings, you can choose the display that you want to see the Display information.

If you want to extend the taskbar to multi-monitor, you need some advanced tools like Display fusion. Display fusion helps to manage your multi-monitor easily, you can add a taskbar to each of your monitors. Now different types of monitors available in the market, each having the latest type of connectors. Home monitors come with VGA and HDMI ports. Whereas high-end gaming and ultra-wide monitors come with Type-c connector. The monitor’s resolution varies from Full HD (1920 x 1080) to 4k (3840×2160) resolution. Check the display port available on your PC or laptop first, then check the available display ports on your monitor. If your laptop has only a VGA port and your monitor has VGA and HDMI port, you can use the only VGA cable to connect your laptop to your monitor. Then a VGA to a VGA monitor is sufficient for your need. If your laptop has an HDMI port and your monitor also has an HDMI port, then get an HDMI to an HDMI cable.
