Securely Transfer Files with WinSCP

Do you want to securely transfer files between your local computer and a remote computer? Amazon S3 provides storage through web services interfaces like REST, SOAP, and BitTorrent. WinSCP tool uses the REST interface to interact with Amazon S3. If you are not familiar with WinSCP, it is an open-source free SFTP client, FTP client, WebDAV client, S3 client, and SCP client. It helps to transfer file between a local and a remote computer. When you installing the software, you must select your preferred user interface (Explorer or Commander interfaces). You can change the user interface later. The Commander interface is based on Norton Commander and other file managers. This interface displays the local folder in the left panel and a remote folder in the right panel. You can transfer files between these folders. The Explorer interface is similar to Windows Explorer, here you can only see the remote folder. You can use drag and drop to transfer files.

The WinSCP tool supports different transfer protocols like SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol), FTP (File Transfer Protocol), SCP (Secure Copy Protocol), WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning), and S3 (Amazon S3). To start the session, open WinSCP, the Login dialog appears. To connect to a site, select New Site node in the tree on the left. Then select the protocol, enter the hostname and the user name and your password. In the Hostname box, type name, or the IP address of the server. The Port number box is for port number on the server that you want to connect.

The list on the left shows the sites and remote workspace. Double-clicking a site or workspace opens it. You can edit by using the Edit button. After making the changes, save them with the Save button. You can also save modified site under a new name using Save As command from the drop down menu of Save button. If you don’t want to make any changes, use the Cancel button to rollback your changes. To delete, go to Manage menu, then Delete command (or press the Delete key), it will delete the selected site or site folder. Remember, deleting a site folder deletes all the sites it contains.
